Hello Twistival: Goodbye, Randle St!

We've got some big news: after four glorious years we're leaving our Randle St warehouse in Surry Hills.

And we're throwing a party to say goodbye. With free wine, no less! Joining us will be some of the finest independent artists and musicians in Sydney.

So put Saturday 28th April down in your diaries.

Come along and sample some gorgeous lo-fi troubadours in the afternoon and dusk, sink into some beautiful films and ensemble indie bands in the early evening; and party to some electric audiovisual DJ sets into the night.

Of course, it wouldn't be Twist if you didn't get to interact and affect the development of a set or two - so expect some ridiculous audience interaction games to boot.

Over the past 2 years we've built a strong local musical community event with Twist. What started as a humble fundraiser has led to a network of dozens of musicians, artists and enthusiasts. Now that we're leaving Randle St, we're changing the monthly event to an annual festival-like event: Twistival. This thing has morphed into a new beast altogether and we are excited with what Twistival can become: an annual celebration of independent arts in Sydney.

Bands:
The Leichhardt International Ukestra (ukelele covers!); The Lunch Mothers (indie bluegrass); Chaika (world folk/jazz); Chris Neto (singer/songwriter, gorgeous sound); Singing Skies (country/folk); Juniper (folk/rock); DJs from the SHARE crew (Sydney); regular Twisters Robin Dixon, Dave Carr, Aimee Falzon, Shakthi Sivanathan; and MANY MORE. Further announcements coming soon.

Films:
OJ on Broadway - short music doco dir. Curtis Taylor
Marco - short music doco dir. Guido Gonzalez
Ama & Chan Kitchen Rescue (sneak peek of new comedic web series) dir. Alan Lao
Mamu (Ghost) - short thriller dir. Curtis Taylor

October Twist #3: Chaika play "Der Golem"

Chaika

We continue our season of nights of silent film with live improvised music in October with the 1920s feature-length film "Der Golem" (directed by Carl Boese and Paul Wegener).

October Twist #3: "Der Golem" with Chaika
Wednesday October 26th, 8-10:30pm
CuriousWorks HQ: Suite 402, 11 Randle St Surry Hills
$10 (tax deductible) donation

This classic work of Gothic expressionism is based on a folktale: in 16th-century Prague, a Jewish rabbi creates a giant creature from clay (the titular Golem) and, using sorcery, brings the creature to life in order to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution. Inevitably, the Golem runs amok and must be stopped...

The live score will be performed by Sydney-based quartet Chaika. These four multi-instrumentalists began with their roots in Klezmer and now have their branches swaying in the breeze of Bulgarian song, Balkan melodies, eastern rhythms, jazz improvisations and even Celtic colourations. They weave lush four-part vocal harmonies together with diverse instrumental textures in their performances of both original and traditional music. The group features Laura Altman on clarinet/ voice, Emily-Rose Sarkova on accordion/voice/piano, Susie Bishop on violin/guitar/voice, and Laura Bishop on accordion/piano/double- bass/voice.

This event will be held under a NSW fundraising certificate at CuriousWorks HQ, with proceeds going to support projects with disadvantaged and diverse artists around Australia.

Wednesday 19th October: The String Contingent

Tscphoto1

Next Wednesday, October 19, CuriousWorks hosts amazing local instrumental trio The String Contingent, in the only Sydney show of their current international tour.

October Twist #2: The String Contingent

Wed 19/10

8-10:30 pm (two sets)

Suite 402, 11 Randle St Surry Hills

$15 tax-deductible donation

The String Contingent meld the raw wildness of Scottish folk, the organic dynamism of American bluegrass and the refined acoustic sensibility of the classical string trio. Chris Stone (violin), Graham McLeod (guitar) and Holly Downes (double bass) have retain the spontaneity of free improvisation within the structurally integrated ethos of the chamber ensemble.

This young group posseses superb musicianship, Graham’s thoughtful picking providing the secure backbone on which Chris might explore sounds alternately tender or wildly yowling (Warren Ellis eat your heart out), while the melodic potential of the double bass is deftly revealed under Holly’s sure fingers. Meanwhile, the songs themselves indicate a store of thoughtfully accumulated youthful wisdom and an ebullient joy in the contingent possibilities of life.

The String Contingent will be playing two sets live and (almost comletely) unplugged in the cosy surrounds of our warehouse space. As always, the show will be held under a NSW fundraising certificate, with proceeds going to support diverse artists and communities around Australia.

We hope to see you there!

Dear friends,
Welcome to the new Twist blog, here at thetwist.com.au!

It may have seemed like a quiet few weeks at CuriousWorks, as we've been working on other projects. But we are overjoyed to announce an exciting programme of events for the remainder of the year, and would love you to join us for them.

Our regular Wednesday night show of improvised music, Twist, returns happily in September. In the spirit of the silent film experiment we hosted in March, this show and the next three monthly Twist nights will feature a live band, comprising some of Sydney's top improvisers, providing a more-or-less spontaneous soundtrack to a classic silent film. We begin on 21/9 with a night dedicated to whimsical shorts by the magician of the silent screen, legendary trick photographer George Méliès, and short comedies by another true star of early cinema, Buster Keaton. Music will be provided by a band of Twist veterans, including David Carr (guitars, banjo), Robin Dixon (strings) and Chris Browne (saxophones).

Some other dates for your diary:
October 26thDer Golem, with an improvised score of haunting Eastern European folk and jazz by members of Chaika (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chaika/254093001282433)

December 14thNosferatu, with an improvised score of eerie soundscape by musicians including Luke Telford (electric guitar) and others.

In addition, our semi-regular band nights return in October. On Saturday 8th, we are pleased to host Packwood for a night of richly arranged acoustic alt-folk. This banjo-led ensemble from Sydney, boasting a mini-orchestra of strings, brass and woodwind, are fresh from recording their debut EP and releasing the first single "Longyearbyen" ( http://packwood.bandcamp.com/track/longyearbyen ).

The quality acoustic classical/folk continues on Wednesday 19th October, when local instrumental trio The String Contingent play two glorious (almost) unplugged sets on the Sydney leg of their tour. For a taste, head to www.thestringcontingent.com/

All the above-mentioned events will be held at CuriousWorks HQ under a NSW fundraising certificate, with proceeds going to support diverse artists and communities around Australia.

May Twist #2: Embedded and Jordan Dorjee

The second of the May Twist nights brings exciting spontaneous collaborations back to the CuriousWorks HQ. The first set will be played by Jordan Dorjee. This avid hip-hop turntablist appreciates the revolutionary form of musical composition that celebrated collage, noise, experiment, speed of thought and wrist and a deep archival knowledge, and unleashed the power of cutting and scratching to a higher level of virtuosity.
Media_httpthetwistcom_jczid
The second set comes courtesy of Embedded, a new improvising quartet who create " an intense concentration...a mesmeric world of sound" (Tony Osborne, RealTime). The quartet comprises Jim Denley on sax&flutes, Monika Brooks on accordion, Sam Pettigrew on double bass, and Rishin Singh on trombone. An entirely improvised set will be accompanied by visual from artist MAYU. May Twist #2 Wednesday 18th May 8pm-11pm Suite 402, 11 Randle St Surry Hills Entry by $10 (tax deductible) donation As always, all proceeds go to support diverse artists and helping disadvantaged communities across Australia. This event will be held under a NSW fundraising certificate.

May Twist #1: My Goodness, McGuiness! Album Launch

In May, CuriousWorks is hosting three fantastic fundraising nights of intriguing, compelling music. The first of these events is the launch of the new album "Insular Peninsula", by Sydney-based jazz ensemble My Goodness, McGuiness! My Goodness, McGuiness! are connected to an older tradition, of which Bartók himself was enthusiastically a part, and which was best expressed in the jazz idiom by Gil Evans. It is the artist as ethnographer, equipped with education and knowledge but wanting to learn something new, opening their ears to the world and letting it sing to them. The arrangements live up to this attitude in every way, from their openness and light melodic touch to the chosen instrumentation. A trombone player, composer, and producer, Lucian McGuiness has performed with ensembles as varied as Joanna Newsom, the Mike Nock Project, King Tide, Steve Hunter's Nine Lives and the Orkestra of the Underground.

The band also features Dan Junor on sax, Aaron Flower on guitar, Alex Boneham on bass and Fabian Hevia on percussion. Support will be ably provided on the night by local folk troubadour Leroy Lee. May Twist #1 Saturday 7th May 8pm-11pm Suite 402, 11 Randle St Surry Hills Entry by $10 (tax deductible) donation As always, all proceeds go to support diverse artists and helping disadvantaged communities across Australia. This event will be held under a NSW fundraising certificate.

April Twist: Michael Beach, Caitlin Park, Matt Banham, the Maple Trail

In April, CuriousWorks welcomes four solo artists, each with their own unique sound.
Media_httpwwwcuriousw_ssfub
Michael Beach is a San Francisco-based musician. The formative years of his musical career were spent in Melbourne, Australia where he released several EPs with Electric Jellyfish (Ecstatic Yod, Twin Lakes) as well as his debut LP, Blood Courses (2008). He will be launching his 7" single "A Horse" on the night. Expect sparse electric guitar and compelling singing: .
"Somehow these songs seem to exist outside the framework of popular music, their structures both classic and completely individual." - messandnoise.com
Caitlin Park hails from closer to home. This electric-acoustic artist has been quietly impressing Sydney audiences for a while now with her cinematic compositions and warm vocals. http://www.myspace.com/caitlinpark. The Maple Trail is Aidan Roberts, frontman of well-loved psychedelic guitar pop band Belles Will Ring, playing solo. Haunting, atmospheric electric folk songs. http://www.myspace.com/themapletrail. Matt Banham is the frontman of Adelaide indie band No Through Road. Expect rickety lo-fi folk songs, delivered with panache. http://www.myspace.com/mattbanham. Juniper Album Launch

There'll also be photography exhibited by three very talented ladies - Bec Gallo, Mel Pragassen and Yonah Festinger to accompany the spoken word.
